Every word has at least two definitions, either the denotative or connotative meaning.
So what’s the difference?
DENOTATION refers to the dictionary meaning of a word, in other words, the literal definition of the word.
CONNOTATION refers to the emotional or figurative meaning of a word, which can be positive or negative.
The connotation of a word exists together with the denotation of it
EXAMPLE
"Man, she is hot!"
HOT in the literal sense, means having a high degree of heat or having a high temperature
Denotation - “Man, she is having a fever!”
HOT in the figurative sense, implies something about the emotions
Connotation - "Man, she is attractive!"
